Case contributed by Henry Knipe
Diagnosis probable

Presentation

Follow-up from clinic.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

A heterogeneous mass located within the anterosuperior mediastinum at the level of the thoracic inlet. The mass has lobulated margins, with appearances of a multinodular thyroid. No thyroid tissue seen within the thyroid bed. No abnormal lymph nodes.

Case Discussion

This was initially an incidental finding, and the patient has been followed for a number of years with no change to the anterior mediastinum mass. It is most likely an ectopic thyroid. Mediastinal ectopic thyroid is rare, accounting for <1% of ectopic thyroid sites.
