Emphysematous pancreatitis

Presentation

Debilitated patient with abdominal pain.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Male

CT Abdomen and pelvis

Non-contrast CT of the abdomen demonstrates gas surrounding the body and tail of the pancreas extending within the anterior pararenal space and the root of the mesentery. Inflammatory changes involving the surrounding fat of the pancreas are also seen. Additional findings include:

  • pneumobilia
  • pneumoperitoneum
  • hydropic gallbladder with mild inflammatory changes involving the surrounding fat of the gallbladder
  • incidental bilateral inguinal hernia

Case Discussion

Emphysematous pancreatitis is an unusual form and severe form of pancreatitis with a high mortality.
