Epididymal and testicular appendages

Case contributed by Dr Vasileios Rafailidis

Presentation

Scrotal swelling.

Patient Data

Age: 9 years
Gender: Male
Ultrasound

Grey-scale high-resolution ultrasound with a linear-array transducer of the scrotum reveals appendages of the upper pole of the testis and a smaller in the head of the epididymis.

Power Doppler image of the same patient demonstrates no blood flow at the appendages.

Extended field-of-view technique reveals the contents of the scrotum. We can see the testis and epididymis with their appendages along with hydrocele.

Case Discussion

Testis and epididymis may appear with appendages which are formed during development of the genito-urinary system. Appendages are less frequently seen in vas aberrans and paradidymis. As in our case, these formations may coexist and hydrocele can make identification easier.
