Extensor digitorum longus tenosynovits

Case contributed by Roberto Schubert
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Pain and swelling over the dorsal ankle and foot. History unremarkable.

Patient Data

Age: 40
Gender: Male

Distension of the EDL tendon sheath by T2-hyperintense effusion.

Case Discussion

EDL tenosynovitis has been infrequently described. It seems to be related to the typical shuffling gait in ultramarathon runners. Tight-fitting shoes and impingement by the talar head may also play a role1.
