Fatty liver

Case contributed by Dr Franco Ruales

The liver shows signal drop in out of phase sequence

Case Discussion

Magnetic Resonance images shows diffuse fatty infiltration.

These are images taken on sequence so-called "chemical shift".

Normally, the liver and spleen signal intensity change in these sequences, however, when there is fatty infiltration of liver, liver  is "black" in the images out of phase when compared with the images in phase. As a point of comparison, spleen can be used, which does not black is in any of the images. So should be healthy without liver fatinfiltration.
