Fatty liver: gallbladder equalization

Case contributed by Ian Bickle
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Weight loss. Cause not know. Occult malignancy?

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Female

The liver is diffusely hypodense due to extreme fatty infiltration.  Note the attenuation is near equal to the gallbladder.

Small left ovarian cyst. No other abnormality.

Case Discussion

In cases of moderate-severe fatty infiltration of the liver, the liver is isodense with the gallbladder (containing bile). This may informally be termed "gallbladder equalization". This CT is a good example of this growing trend.
