Presentation
Exophytic right breast mass.
Patient Data
The craniocaudal mammogram of the right breast shows an exophytic high-density mass with well-circumscribed margins located in the external quadrant.
The mediolateral oblique mammogram of the right breast shows that the exophytic high-density mass is not associated with skin thickening.
A longitudinal sonogram of the right breast shows a big solid regular heterogeneous mass with well-circumscribed margins, echogenic areas, and internal vascularity.
FDG PET-CT of the right breast shows marked focal hypermetabolism.
Case Discussion
Diagnosis: fibromatosis of the breast.
Fibromatosis or desmoid tumor of the breast is a rare tumor and represents <2% of all breast tumors. This tumor is a proliferation of fibroblasts or myofibroblasts that infiltrate the stroma or breast fat and are low grade, but they are very aggressive and affect women young and old.
The etiology is idiopathic but could be associated with Gardner syndrome and familial adenomatous polyposis syndrome. According to some authors, it is secondary to trauma or surgery.
This tumor should be treated with wide excision.
