Presentation
Patient with penetrating injury to foot by wood two weeks ago, presents with localized hindfoot pain, swelling and skin ulcer.
Patient Data
Soft tissue swelling in the hind foot on the plantar aspect.
No bony abnormality.
There is a low signal foreign body located at the plantar surface lateral side and superficial to the plantar fascia due to wood material.
Abnormal bone marrow signal (high on PD/T2 fat suppression sequences) involving the lateral side of calcaneal tuberosity is related to osteitis.
A sinus tract is seen from the lateral side of calcaneus bone into the skin in the lateral aspect of the hindfoot.
Edema and fluid signal intensity also are seen within the hindfoot subcutaneous tissues.
Mortise joint effusion is noted.
Abnormal intrasubstance increased signal and thickening is seen along the course of the anterior talofibular ligament related to ATFL sprain.
Case Discussion
The foreign body was surgically removed.
