Foraminal lumbar disc protrusion

Case contributed by Frank Gaillard
Diagnosis certain

Patient Data

Age: Adult

Right-sided foraminal lumbar disc protrusion compressing only the exiting nerve root and not narrowing the subarticular recess.

A selected image from a different level of the same patient demonstrating normal anatomy, with the exiting nerve root surrounded by fat.

Case Discussion

Disc projecting into the right neural-exit foramen and compressing the exiting nerve root in this case is relatively easy to overlook if foraminal disc protrusions are not actively sought.
