Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Routine 12 week gestation antenatal scan

Patient Data

Age: 12 weeks gestation

Antenatal ultrasound

ultrasound

Ultrasound demonstrates an anterior abdominal wall defect with herniated bowel. The cord does not arise from the herniated content but rather from the abdominal wall to the side of the defect.

Case Discussion

This case illustrates the typical appearances of gastroschisis, which should not be confused with an omphalocoele or the normal herniation of bowel into the umbilical cord.
