Hepatisation of gall bladder

Case contributed by Dr Shailaja Muniraj

Vague upper abdominal pain.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male

Gall bladder is well distended and is completely filled with amorphous echogenic sludge. Additionally multiple calculi noted in the range of 2 – 4mm. Gall bladder wall is of normal thickness. CBD is of normal caliber.

Case Discussion

Hepatisation of gall bladder is observed on ultrasound, when sludge fills up the distended gall bladder lumen. Since it is similar to the hepatic echotexture, it is known as hepatisation.
