Hepatisation of the gallbladder

Case contributed by Omar M. Sultan
Diagnosis probable

Presentation

Long standing upper abdominal pain with recurrent vomiting.

Patient Data

Gender: Male
ultrasound

Mildly distended gallbladder showing internal fully turbid echogenic bile.

The gallbladder wall looks normal. No internal stones could be noted.

CBD shows normal diameter.

Case Discussion

Hepatisation of the gallbladder is usually well seen on ultrasound. It occurs when the gallbladder content appears echogenic, similar to hepatic parenchyma. It is usually seen in cases of longstanding bile stasis whatever the cause, e.g. post-infection, with and without stones and even incidentally.
