Interrupted inferior vena cava with azygos continuation

Presentation

Incidental finding

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

The hepatic segment of the IVC is absent.

The inferior IVC continues superiorly as the enlarged azygos vein.

The hepatic veins directly adjoin into the right atrium.

The pancreatic tissue completely encircles the second part of the duodenum, defining annular pancreas.

Case Discussion

Interruption of the inferior vena cava (IVC) with azygos continuation occurs when there is failure of formation of the right subcardinal-hepatic anastomosis resulting to atrophy of the subcardinal vein. This results to congenital absence of the hepatic/suprarenal segment of the IVC. The infrarenal IVC continues superiorly as a dilated azygos vein.
