Presentation
Acute abdomen
Patient Data
There is a bowel-within-bowel configuration seen forming a mass in the right side of the abdomen, containing multiple enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes, mesenteric fat and mesenteric vessels. There is also circumferential colonic wall thickening with submucosal edema (congestion), with no gas bubbles within the involved bowel wall. The bowel enema images show a persistent intussusception.
Case Discussion
MSCT findings are of a hepatic flexure (colo-colic) intussusception. The most common cause of adult intussusception is colon cancer. The histology in this case confirmed a colonic adenocarcinoma.
