Car accident. Vertex scalp hematoma.

Patient Data

Age: 65
Gender: Male

Lateral image demonstrates prominent upper cervical spine prevertebral swelling and a defect in the posterior arch of C1. The PEG view shows lateral displacement of the lateral masses of C1 relative to C2. Appearances are consistent with a Jefferson fracture of C1 (burst type fracture).

CT confirms a Jefferson fracture of C1 with single fractures through the anterior and posterior arches. Note the small amount of healing new bone formation consistent with this CT being performed several weeks after the initial injury.
