Large bowel obstruction

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Not passing stool or flatus.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Distended gas-filled colon, air-fluid levels present centrally and periphery in the abdomen.

Post repair

x-ray

After repairing the hernia, no obstruction.

Case Discussion

The patient presented with signs of acute large bowel obstruction, which is confirmed on a standing plain x-ray. On examination of the patient, a strangulated hernia noted which was surgically repaired.

Large bowel obstruction is suspected if bowel diameter exceeds 6 cm, or cecum more than 9 cm and multiple air-fluid levels.
