Left atrial enlargement

Dysphagia and heart burn

Patient Data

Age: 76 years
Gender: Female

The esophagus is displaced posteriorly and to the left side with mid esophageal narrowing that doesn't persist all through the study suggesting external compression. The shadow of enlarged left atrium is noted on oblique views. Also large amount of contrast reflux at Trendlenberg position is noted.

On the control AP view the sub carinal angle is splayed in keeping with left atrial enlargement.

Case Discussion

The esophagus comes in contact with the left atrium hence, left atrial dilatation displace the esophagus and resulted in dysphagia.
