Left iliac wing fracture - Duverney fracture

Case contributed by Dr Levente István Lánczi

Patient lost consciousness, fall onto her left hip. Tenderness in left hip region, impaired movement of left lower extremity.

Patient Data

Age: 78 years
Gender: Female

A narrow fracture line and slight dislocation is seen on the left iliac wing. Femur is normal without fracture.

Case Discussion

In the hip region, femoral neck and trochanteric fractures are most common. Most of the clinical requests and patients focus on femoral fractures.

Pelvic bone fractures - including the pubic bone and iliac wing - are less common, but always should be excluded.

Iliac wing fractures are very uncommon, an isolated iliac wing fracture is a stable benign injury and can can be managed conservatively. Serious and potentially life-threatening associated abdominal, vascular, or neurologic injuries should be excluded.
