Left occipital cavernous venous malformation

Presentation

Recurrent headache. Past history of seizures

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Female

A well-defined calcified left in the periventricular white matter of the parieto-occipital region. no associated regional edema or mass effect. 

Incidentally noticed Tornwaldt cyst of the nasopharynx with calcified wall.

A well-defined left occipital periventricular lesion of hypointense T2 signal (hemosiderin). It shows an internal bubbly appearance on T2 and T1 images. No associated significant edema or mass effect. The lesion shows prominent blooming on GRE images.

Case Discussion

Cerebral cavernous venous malformations or cavernomas are common cerebral vascular malformations. They have characteristic appearances on MRI with popcorn appearance surrounded with the hypointense rim of hemosiderin on T2 and blooming on GRE/ SWI.

They may be associated with developmental venous anomaly (DVA) and must be reported.
