Presentation
Patient with history of recent repair of para-umbilical hernia came for abdominal pain. Lumboperitoneal shunt is incidentally noted.
Patient Data
Lumboperitoneal shunt catheter is noted in place. LV5 spinectomy was done and the catheter connects the lumbar spinal subarachnoid space to the peritoneal cavity.
The surgical bed of paraumbilical hernia repair showed anterior abdominal wall extra-abdominal intermediate density lesion that is measuring 4.5 x 17 cm in dimension. Associated thickening and stranding of the surrounding fat, likely seroma.
Case Discussion
Lumboperitoneal shunts are less common than ventriculoperitoneal shunts for the treatment of increased CSF pressure. There are two types:
- lumboperitoneal shunt (LP shunt)
- lumbosubcutaneous shunt (LS shunt)
It connects the spinal subarachnoid space in the lumbar spine and the peritoneal cavity.
