Presentation

Pain and loss of extension in the IP joint of the thumb after collision with an opponent in a handball game. No specific signs on radiographs of the thumb.

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male

Signal increase and discontinuity of the distal slip of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon near its insertion at the base of the 1st distal phalanx.

Case Discussion

These lesions are normally treated conservatively. MRI can be used to localize the ends of the ruptured tendon.
