Massive bladder simulating pelvic mass on AXR

Presentation

Abdominal pain and palpable abdominal mass.

Patient Data

Age: 85 years
Gender: Male

Large opacity within the pelvis extending into the abdomen displacing loops of gas-filled bowel.

Case Discussion

The patient had dementia and on further history and examination, was found to be in urinary retention. Bedside ultrasound confirmed a massively filled urinary bladder and a catheter was inserted which immediately relieved the symptoms. The patient was known to have significant prostatomegaly.
