IntraOp smear preparation

pathology

Intra-operative smear/crush preparation shows meningothelial cells clumping together forming small whorls. Cytoplasmic content smears into characteristic "Batman's cape" shape between the cells. These are to be distinguished from fibriliary processes from astrocytic tumors. Typical appearances of a meningothelial meningioma.

Case Discussion

Meningothelial meningiomas are the most common extra-axial tumors of the central nervous system. They are a non-glial neoplasm that originates from the arachnoid cap cells of the meninges.
