Metatarsal stress fractures - multiple

Case contributed by Patsy Robertson
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

History of surgery for bilateral metatarsal stress fractures, now presents with further right sided foot pain.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Female

Stress fracture of the 5th metatarsal bone has been fixed previously with a screw and has healed.

There is now a fracture through the lateral cortex of the mid shaft of the 4th metatarsal with periosteal bone formation consistent with a new stress fracture.

Case Discussion

This patient has previously had an ipsilateral 5th metatarsal fracture and has previously had stress fractures of the right 4th and 5th metatarsals. The cause of these was not clear - they were not due to sport but are likely due to abnormal stress for some reason. Her bone density is unknown.
