Multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK)

Presentation

Newborn with an abnormal left kidney on antenatal ultrasound

Patient Data

Age: 5 days
Gender: Male
ultrasound

Enlarged left kidney with multiple non-communicating cysts of varying sizes and shape replacing the entire renal parenchyma with intercystic echogenic areas representing most likely fibrous parenchyma. 

The right kidney shows normal appearance

Case Discussion

Ultrasound features typical of a left unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK). 

The diagnosis of MCDK is often made antenatally usually from the 15th week of gestation. There is a predisposition for the left kidney with a higher incidence in males for unilateral MCDK (as in this case).
