Nasogastric tube in bronchus

Presentation

Patient recovering from multi-trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

The NGT has been advanced down the left main bronchus with the tip in the left lower lobe bronchus (position corrected on subsequent imaging). A loop of the NGT as also protruded into the right bain bronchus.

Right-sided PICC remains in position. Bilateral lower to mid zone air space opacities. No large pleural effusions. 

Case Discussion

As anyone who has inserted nasogastric tubes will tell you, it can be tricky to know where it has gone. Clearly administering medications or liquid food before checking would be a very bad idea.
