The cerebral hemispheres demonstrate abnormal signal intensity within the basal ganglia. This is best seen in the diffusion images these areas demonstrate restricted diffusion which is also seen in the hippocampi and ventrolateral thalami. The motor strip is essentially normal and the white matter is unremarkable.

IMPRESSION:

Evidence of basal ganglia injury as evidence by restricted diffusion. This is most in keeping with acute profound asphyxia. The degree of injury is moderate.

Case Discussion

This toddler fell in the family swimming pool, through an accidentally left open gate. The changes of hypoxia - ischemia depend not only the duration and severity of the insult but also the age of the patient.
