Neonatal clavicle fracture

Case contributed by Adam Eid Ramsey, MD
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Pseudoparalysis and crepitus on examination of the left clavicle.

Patient Data

Age: 1 day
Gender: Male
x-ray

Displaced, distracted and angulated left clavicle fracture proximal to the attachment of the coracoclavicular ligament.

Case Discussion

Left clavicle fracture was identified in a 1 day old infant born to a 28 year old mother via spontaneous vaginal delivery. Management is conservative as these fractures typically heal on their own within 7-10 days. Parents were advised that the affected arm should be in first and out last when dressing and undressing the baby to minimize discomfort and traction on the broken bone.
