Young boy presenting with difficuties and noisy breathing since birth. Persistent cough.
Patient Data
There is a 32 x 27 x 35mm (AP x TV x CC) posterior mediastinal cystic mass, with HU=22, which is displacing and compressing the trachea anteriorly. This is located just above the aortic arch level. The esophagus is also severely compressed and displaced to the right side of this cystic mass.
Right lower lobe (posterior segment) consolidation is also evident.
Case Discussion
Esophageal duplication cysts are rare congenital malformation, difficult to differentiate from bronchogenic cysts on imaging (esophageal duplication cyst vs bronchogenic cysts). As such, histology is required to make the differentiation. This was a typical presentation in this case.
