Olecranon bursitis (radiograph)

Case contributed by Dai Roberts
Diagnosis probable

Presentation

Acute on chronic pain and swelling over the left elbow ?bony injury.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Prominent soft tissue swelling overlies the olecranon, most likely in keeping with a distended olecranon bursa due to bursitis. Normal elbow alignment, no displaced fracture.

Case Discussion

Olecranon bursitis can occur after both a single traumatic event and repetitive trauma to the olecranon.  In those without trauma, a crystal arthropathy should be considered, such as gout.
