Orbital and periorbital cellulitis

Presentation

Pain with periorbital edema of the right eye.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Female

Soft-tissue thickening with small collection and area of enhancement anterior to the right orbital septum in keeping with a preseptal periorbital cellulitis.

Inflammatory stranding of the intraconal fat mainly around the optic nerve with enhancement which may indicate an associated postseptal orbital cellulitis.

Normal appearance of the extraocular muscles. The paranasal sinuses are clear. No obvious intracranial abnormality.

 

Case Discussion

MRI features are most consistent with an orbital infection associating a preseptal periorbital cellulitis and postseptal orbital cellulitis.
