Osteomyelitis - 4th metatarsal bone

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Direct trauma to foot dorsum - 1 month prior. Presents with local pain and swelling. Referred for ultrasound of foot swelling.

Patient Data

Age: 1.5-2 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

Erosion of 4th metatarsal dorsal cortex is noted with adjacent soft tissue swelling and hypervascularity. No mobile echoes are noted.

The dorsal cortices of the 3rd and 5th metatarsal bones are intact.

Case Discussion

Findings suggest 4th metatarsal osteomyelitis involving diaphyseal region with adjacent soft tissue involvement.
