Ovarian hernia

Case contributed by Lee-Anne Slater
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Patient's mother noticed a lump in the left groin when changing her diaper.

Patient Data

Age: 4 weeks
Gender: Female
ultrasound

Structure with follicles consistent with an ovary sitting on the anterior abdominal wall in the first image. In the second image, the ovary is seen to partially return into the abdomen. The third image confirms presence of intact vascular supply.

Case Discussion

Findings are in keeping with an ovarian inguinal hernia (canal of Nuck hernia). These hernias are at risk of incarceration with subsequent compromise to the vascular supply of the ovary.
