Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

Another in a series of thyroid "snapshots" to illustrate imaging findings. All are biopsy proven.

Solid cystic lesion in the left lobe of the thyroid. Loss of hypoechoic halo posteriorly.

Case Discussion

Do not confuse this appearance with the other cases in this series showing multiple small cysts in a lesion.  Look carefully at cases  21888 and 21891 to understand the difference.

This is completely different. This lesion has a large solid component and the cysts are large. Note the loss of the "halo" posteriorly as indicated on the annotated second image.

FNA confirmed papillary carcinoma of the thyroid.
