Case Discussion

Released cement particles trigger the release of inflammatory mediators. Local accumulation of inflammatory mediators produces a local giant cell granulomatous reaction and leads to osteolysis and formation of cystic change in adjacent bone. This process is referred to as particle disease, and is a significant cause of revision surgery.
