This stack of images shows the formation of a penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer (PAU). A penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer forms when atheromatous plaques erode. The ulcerating atherosclerotic lesion penetrates the intima and progresses into the media. When the ulcer reach the media, it may also injure the vasa vasorum that may lead to intramural hematoma formation.
