Pelvic schwannoma (large)

A large heterogeneous mass in the pelvis is present with enhancing and cystic components. 

Case Discussion

Patient went on to have a resection. 

Histology

Gross Description:

The specimen is received in a plastic bag labeled with the patient's demographics and pelvic tumor. It consists of a large fragment of previously deflated cystic mass measuring 9 cm in diameter. The cystic wall is smooth with some areas of hemorrhage and varies in thickness between 1 and 2 cm. 

Microscopic Description:

Sections show an encapsulated benign spindle cell tumor with cystic elements. Antoni A and B areas are seen. Verocay body formation is focally prominent. A localized area of chronic inflammation composed of plasma cells and lymphocytes is seen, associated with hemosiderin.

Final Diagnosis:

Schwannoma.
