Peritoneal carcinomatosis

Case contributed by Dr Omar Giyab

The patient underwent hysterectomy, with unilateral adnexectomy 30 years ago. The patient had lost 7 kgs in the past 2 months. Upon examination there was a pulpable mass in the suprapubic region.

Patient Data

Age: 70-75Y
Gender: Female

CT examination revealed widespread peritoneal, inhomogenous soft tissue densities, and free abdominal fluid. A large septated, cystic mass was seen in the pelvis, originating from the area of the adnexes.

Case Discussion

Ovarian cancer is usually at an advanced stage when peritoneal carcinomatosis is diagnosed. Ultrasound usually sees a large ovarian mass, without any significant finding on the peritoneal surfaces. The condition is accompanied by free abdominal fluid, and metastatic deposits are commonly seen on the surface of the liver.
