Persistent primary vitreous

Case contributed by Dr Jeremy Jones

Leukocoria and monocular blindness.

Patient Data

Age: 4 month
Gender: Female

The vitreous is abnormal with a anterior density and secondary vascular stalk connecting it to the posterior internal aspect of the globe.

Case Discussion

Features here are of persistant hyperplastic primary vitreous where the embryologic vitreous does not regress and the globe is filled with this embryonic material. It is usually seen as an anterior soft-tissue mass within the vitreous that may have cystic appearances and is connected to the posterior globe by a vascular stalk.
