Phase-encoded motion artifact

Case contributed by Roberto Schubert
Diagnosis certain
mri

These transverse stripes overlapping the images result from abdominal wall motion in a patient breathing during phase encoding of the slice. There is also a wraparound (aliasing) artifact and inhomogeneous fat saturation of the subcutaneous tissue, making the motion artifacts more conspicuous.

Case Discussion

Besides asking the patient to hold his breath, these artifacts could have been reduced by using a larger field of view or putting a saturation bar on the anterior abdominal wall.
