Post operative achilles tendon (ultrasound)

Case contributed by Maulik S Patel
Diagnosis not applicable

Presentation

History of Achilles tendon tear repair 6 weeks prior to the presentation. Referred for ultrasound evaluation of the tendon integrity.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male

The Achilles tendon shows continuity. It is thickened with mild heterogeneous echopattern. There are sutures in and around the tendon substance. There is no local collection. The dynamic scan showed normal tendon movements with foot movements. There is a calcaneal cortical defect due to anchor placement.

Case Discussion

The case shows normal ultrasound findings in the post-repair Achilles tendon.

Ultrasound findings of the normal post-repair tendon are loss of the fibrillary echopattern, presence of homogeneity, surgical material in relation to the tendon1. Post-repair tendon shows increased thickness. The dynamic scan is better for the evaluation of the tendon continuity.
