Post-surgical breast scar

Case contributed by Garth Kruger
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Routine mammography. Previous bilateral breast prostheses since removed.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female
mammography

Routine MLO views as part of a standard mammogram.

Note the linear density deep to the breast parenchyma bilaterally. the density on the right MLO is more pronounced than that on the left view.

The left view also shows a typical intramammary lymph node.

Case Discussion

The appearance is quite typical of previously removed prostheses. The amount of scarring varies in a single patient and between patients. The scarring may on occasion be seen with residual capsular calcifications if present.

Do not be phased by this appearance. It is commonly seen and stays stable with follow up mammograms. The secret to the diagnosis is the tech sheet showing the surgical history.
