Marked dilatation of the left ureter with atrophic ipsilateral kidney.
Case Discussion
The presence of a distal ureteral aperistaltic segment is the most common cause of megaureters. If the end portion of the urethra does not transmit the peristaltic wave or does not dilate enough to allow the free passage of urine, it results in upstream urethral dilation. Ureteral peristalsis waves become less effective in the course of time even due to dilatation. This together with possible urinary stasis infections could damage the renal parenchyma.
