Proximal phalanx osteomyelitis following laceration

Presentation

Right middle finger PIP deep laceration from scissors. Exclude foreign body/fracture

Patient Data

Age: 40
Gender: Male

Laceration within the dorsal soft-tissues overlying the right third proximal phalanx. No bony injury seen. No foreign body identified. 

2 Months Later

x-ray

Patient represented 2 months lateral with swelling and discharge. X-ray shows soft tissue swelling of the 3rd digit with aggressive periosteal reaction of the 3rd proximal phalanx in keeping with osteomyelitis.  

Case Discussion

Osteomyelitis of the 3rd proximal phalanx as a complication of scissor related laceration.
