Pseudoaneurysm of the profunda femoral artery

Case contributed by Charlie Chia-Tsong Hsu

Presentation

Day 1 post coronary intervention. Right femoral artery puncture was performed without US guidance.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

Image 1. B mode US shows an anechoic structure in the right groin measuring 3.5 by 2.5 cm.
Image 2. Doppler US shows swirling flow as evident by different color signal within the lesion (yin yang sign).
Image 3 and 4. A narrow neck region (0.5 cm) is identified and communicates with the profunda femoral artery (PFA). This confirms the finding of a pseudoaneurysm arising from the PFA.
Image 5. Bidirectional "to and fro" flow is present. Due to narrow neck of the aneurysm there is significant turbulent flow as demonstrated by spectral widening.
Image 6. Normal color Doppler flow and triphasic waveform of the superficial femoral artery (SFA).
