Pulmonary arterial hypertension

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Shortness of breath on exertion.

Patient Data

Age: 50 year
Gender: Male
x-ray

The cardiomediastinal outline is within normal limits, other than prominence of the central pulmonary arteries. The peripheral vessels are relatively pruned. 

CT scan with contrast confirms the presence of markedly enlarged central pulmonary arteries, suggestive of pulmonary arterial hypertension. The right ventricle also appears hypertrophied with leftward bowing of the intraventricular septum.

This case demonstrates typical features of pulmonary arterial hypertension, which was confirmed on transthoracic echocardiography.
