Pulmonary mucormycosis

Case contributed by David Holcdorf
Diagnosis possible

Presentation

Febrile.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

New 3 cm nodule/mass in the apical segment right lower lobe. Findings are concerning for infection in this setting, and given the patient's immunosuppressed state a fungal etiology should be suspected.

ct

Focal region of consolidation in apical segment right lower lobe with halo of surrounding ground-glass opacity. No other pulmonary or mediastinal abnormality. Findings are concerning for invasive fungal infection such as angioinvasive aspergillosis.

Case Discussion

Prior chest radiograph 3 months to this chest radiograph was normal.

Typical CT appearance of invasive fungal infection in an immunosuppressed patient, with focal consolidation surrounded by ground-glass opacity (GGO). The GGO reflects adjacent pulmonary hemorrhage.
