Radius stress fracture

Presentation

Several months history of worsening arm pain in a cheerleader.

Patient Data

Age: 15 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

There is a transverse fracture of the radial shaft near the junction of the proximal and mid thirds. Signficant cortical thickening is seen throughout the shaft of the radius. 

Case Discussion

Stress fracture of the radial shaft in a cheerleader related to repeated full weight-bearing on the hand during acrobatics. Note the longstanding adaptive cortical thickening of the radius shaft which pre-dates the fracture.
