Rectus femoris injury - distal myotendinous junction rupture

Presentation

Fall 3 days ago. Pain left thigh. Unable to fully extend leg.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

Complete rupture of the rectus femoris distal myotendinous junction with a craniocaudal defect gap of approximately 3cm between the residual fibers of the rectus femoris component of the quadriceps tendon and the residual distal myotendinous junction. Central tendon is intact. 

Low-grade injuries to the distal myotendinous junctions of vastus medialis and lateralis.

Case Discussion

Rectus femoris is the most commonly injured quadriceps muscle, with the distal myotendinous junction the most common site.
