Renal abscess (subcapsular)

3.4 cm x 2.7 cm 1.8 cm hypoechoic collection in superior pole of left kidney displacing + distorting adjacent renal parenchyma suggesting subcapsular location. Low internal echoes but no vascularity.
Case Discussion
We aspirated the collection but decided against putting a drain given his age and history of autism, the risk of complication if he pulled out the drain was too high.
A renal abscess, like any other abscess, is a collection of infective fluid at abuts the kidney. It is usually a sequelae of acute pyelonephritis, where severe vasospasm and inflammation may occasionally result in liquefactive necrosis and abscess formation.
